Michael D. LaSalle, MD, FACS is a board-certified Diplomat of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. For more than twenty years, he has practiced as a staff attending urologist / surgeon at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey – a division of the RWJ Barnabas Health System. Academically, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology/Surgery at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. Dr. LaSalle is the Co-Director of the Adult Urology Residency Program for Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and he continues to teach and help organize urology education. In February 2020, he merged his urology practice with the Millburn Division of New Jersey Urology in order to further promote excellence in urologic healthcare delivery.
Dr. LaSalle is considered a physician leader and prides himself on the specialized attention he provides his patients. Previously, he served as Chief of the Urology section at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. For fourteen consecutive years he has been consistently recognized by his peers as a New Jersey Monthly Top Doctor. A recipient of the Physician Excellence in Healthcare Award at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in 2018, Dr. LaSalle was awarded for embracing the mission of compassionate care, healthcare excellence and superior service to the patients and families at RWJBarnabas Health. Dr. LaSalle also serves on many committees at Saint Barnabas, including the Medical Executive Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Steering Committee for Research and Innovation. He has been very active in his community by providing education and innovation for healthcare delivery.
Dr. LaSalle graduated Cum Laude in Biochemistry from Cook College, Rutgers University in 1987. Upon graduation, he was awarded the distinction of George H. Cook Honors Scholar due to his advances in molecular immunology and autoimmune diseases. In 1991, he obtained his medical degree at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). After completing a 6-year General Surgery/Urology residency at UMDNJ in 1997, he went on to obtain fellowship training at the Boston University School of Medicine in Male Reproductive Medicine, Erectile Dysfunction and Reconstructive Microsurgery in 1998 under the direction of internationally renowned Dr. Irwin Goldstein and Dr. Robert Oates. This prestigious fellowship enabled Dr. LaSalle to assist with the successful clinical and educational launches of Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Viagra™ as well as GlaxoSmithKline / Bayer Corporation’s Levitra™ and Eli Lilly / Icos Corporation’s Cialis™.
Dr. LaSalle has co-authored more than fifty research abstracts, publications and book chapters including peer reviewed journals and texts. He has lectured nationally on various aspects of urological surgery including erectile dysfunction, male factor infertility and microsurgery. He has received awards of distinction such as the SmithKline/Boston Biomedica Best Abstract Award, the American Academy of Pediatrics – Pediatric Urology Best Clinical Research Finalist as well as the Staff Award at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Department of OB/GYN for teaching.
As a distinguished alumnus from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School, Dr. LaSalle was a recipient of the Charles L. Brown Award in 2007. He was honored for his contributions in organizing the New Jersey state-wide collaboration of resources to advance basic science and clinical research for a bench to bedside translational medicine model. Through collaborations among legislative branches of government, academic institutions and private companies, he helped to establish a collaborative platform for promoting research, innovation and community education.
